This week's House of the Week, Charred Cedar House by the Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori, is located in a residential district of Nagano City, Japan.It sits on a plot of nearly 2,000 square metres, also landscaped by the architect. As with all of Fujimori's designs, it draws inspiration from sources far removed from contemporary Japanese culture.

Though its exact origins are unknown, historians believe the method— which involves charring Japanese cedar with fire, brushing it, cooling it, cleaning it, and varnishing it with a natural oil—began in Japan around the 1600s or 1700s. It is a labor-intensive process, as it takes around seven minutes to char just three boards.

The charred wood will also be unappetizing to insects or rodents, and once covered in its attractive black armor, the surface can face decades of sun and rain (80-100 years is the usual claim for its longevity) with little or no maintenance, apart from an occasional fresh coat of oil (every 15 years or so?).
